From Doing to Thinking

Entrepreneurs like to get their hands dirty and are involved in doing stuff. This is as a result of their expertise, desire and passion.

What happens as their company grows? They cannot be only involved in “doing,” they have to focus on thinking.

An analogy would be that of an entrepreneur who is an expert in building a widget. He/she can spend enough time on developing and building the perfect widget. However, at some point the focus should be on developing a strategy of how to market and sell the widgets, building lots of widgets at a low cost, creating the organization to build and sell widgets, opening new locations, and so on.

Entrepreneurs have to shift their role from “doing” to “thinking” in order to get to the next level.

Encourage Thinking

Entrepreneurs generally “think outside the box” and come up with new, innovative ideas. They seek under-served niches in the marketplace and find unique ways to fulfill unmet or unrecognized needs.

Once they start and grow the business, do Entrepreneurs still foster the culture of “Thinking Outside the Box” in their employees?

An Entrepreneur’s original initiative due to creative thinking is also applicable to his/her organization. If the culture of the company is one of innovation and finding unique ways of doing things better and faster, it will promote not only continued success for the company but also tremendous job satisfaction for employees.

Empower your employees and and encourage free thinking to come up with creative ways to perform their jobs better and improve processes in the company. Entrepreneurs should think outside the box for this employee performance management philosophy.

Solving Problems

Problems cannot be solved at the same level of thinking that created them. – Albert Einstein. What a brilliant statement!

Problems occur in every business and for every Entrepreneur. Inexperience, limited skills and not fully developed thinking contribute to the situation . This is not unique and is to be expected from new Entrepreneurs.

However, learning from your mistakes starts the process of elevating your thinking. If you keep on making the same mistakes in  similar situations, you are not thinking at the next level.

More importantly, the level of thinking to solve the problem has to be at a higher level than what got you there in the first place. If you approach the issue from the same viewpoint as the one that created the problem, it would be difficult to have a new solution. Thinking from different perspectives helps solve problems.

How do you get there? Constant learning from mentors and advisors and acquiring knowledge through self-education elevates your thinking to solve problems. Asking for advice from professionals also contributes to elevating your thinking level.

Fostering the Thinking Process

Entrepreneurs start businesses because they have new, innovative ideas as a result of “thinking outside the box.” They identify underserved niches in the marketplace and find unique ways to fulfill unmet or unrecognized needs.

Do Entrepreneurs, once they start and grow the business, foster the culture of “Thinking Outside the Box” in their employees?

The reason for the Entrepreneur’s original initiative due to creative thinking is also applicable to his/her organization. If the culture of the company is one of innovation and finding unique ways of doing things better and faster, it will promote not only continued success for the company but also tremendous job satisfaction for the employees.

Entrepreneurs should be careful not to create a control-oriented impression that “Thinking Outside the Box” is only meant for them. It gives a feeling of “Do what I say, not what I do.”

Empower your employees and let them come up with creative ways to perform their jobs better and improve processes in the company. Entrepreneurs for this employee performance management philosophy should also think outside the box !
