Managing your Time by Doing the Right Things

Think about time management in another way. If you don’t have time to get things done, are you actually doing the Right Things?

Entrepreneurs, especially early in their careers, often have a tendency to not only do everything themselves, but also focus on doing tasks right – whether they are important or not! This isn’t effective use of their time.

The focus for Entrepreneurs should be to define and do the Right Things and delegate the rest. Once you discover and focus on the Right Things, you will probably have more time to do them. Wasting time on things that Entrepreneurs like to do, being perfect on insignificant tasks, or not delegating steals time from more important things to do for your business. Manage time effectively by changing your thinking.

Doing the Right Things

Entrepreneurs often complain that they don’t have enough time. This isn’t about traditional time management!

Doing the Right Things

Entrepreneurs need to focus on doing the right things for growth. In general, who is right should not matter as much as doing what is right.

Could this actually work in practice?

If the Entrepreneur has created a culture of favoritism and is partial to employees whom he/she likes, then who is right will take precedence. Employees will try to prove they are right to win favors with the Entrepreneur and might even try to put others down. Not a healthy environment for growth!

On the other hand, if the Entrepreneur has established a culture of teamwork, sharing and continuous improvement, then doing what is right will prevail. There will be more emphasis on doing the proper things for the company rather than establishing who is right. In this case it becomes a win-win situation!

What would Entrepreneurs rather have?

Being Right is Not Important

In entrepreneurial companies it is  is critical to do the Right Things for growth. Thus, who is right should not matter as much as doing what is right.

Real Time Management for Entrepreneurs

This is not a blog on how to effectively manage your time. There is enough written about that topic and numerous seminars to obtain practical tools.

Are you Doing the Right Things?

Entrepreneurs are normally go-getters who love to get things done. They are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and delve into tasks at hand in order to accomplish them. As companies grow in size, Entrepreneurs become knowledgeable in most aspects of the functional areas  of their businesses. In most cases they can perform most tasks as well as or better than their employees. Sometimes there is a natural tendency to do things themselves as they can do them better, faster, and right.

The passion of Entrepreneurs to do things right and to do it themselves limits the growth of their companies. Instead, they need to create an environment and culture where their people do things right. Proper training of people, even allowing them to make mistakes and learn from them, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement allows organizations to become self-sustaining and grow well. Entrepreneurs will then not have to worry about doing things right because their people will be doing it themselves.

What should Entrepreneurs do then? Do the Right Things. Please read the full article here.
